Bezza League 25-26 Season Review

Firstly, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for taking part again this season. Obviously it wouldn’t exist without all of you making it what it is. Hopefully you have enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing you take part again next season. If you know of anyone who would like to take part next season, please feel free to spread to word. I will put up a poster for the new season in a few weeks where you can share with friends and family.

Just over a week has passed since Neil Aitchison won his first title in the Bezza League, dominating the field from early on. Massive congratulations to Neil. He led for 33 weeks of the season, the most in Bezza League history. Ian Gibson (3 weeks), Andrew Davison (1 week) and Alfie Adams (1 week) were the others to spend time at the league’s summit. Although this is his first win, Aitchison did come close on 2 previous attempts at silverware. A defeat in the final of the Shield in 21-22 and another defeat in the Cup final in 23-24. This is also the first time in his 9 seasons that Neil has finished in the top 10, with 4 appearances in the top 32. His tally of 51 correct scores was the highest in the league this season, and only the 12th time anyone has broke the 50 barrier for correct scores in a season.

Kev Booth finished 2nd this season and so close to taking the win in only his second season. Glenn Baker finished the season in 3rd, his highest finish in his 11 year stint beating his 4th place finish 3 seasons ago.

Congratulations also go to our cup competition winners as well…Sam Hardie (Cup), Stevie Docherty (Europe & Shield) and Aaron Nagra (Knockout). Tom Beck and Adam Campbell shared the pot in the first Eliminator, while Phil Ellis and Mark Johnson split the pot on the second Eliminator of the season.

Here are a few more facts and stats that may interest you from the season just gone…

  • The most amount of correct scores were predicted by our league champion Neil Aitchison with 51. Kev Booth was 2nd on that list with 49, with former champion Dan Stewart, who finished 5th in the league table, was 3rd highest predicting 47 correct scores.
  • Bezza Knockout runner-up Nathan Smillie finished 80th in the league but still managed to come out on top with the most amount of correct outcomes, predicting 154. Alex Hamilton, who was 47th in the league, was 2nd with 149 correct outcomes. Tim Simpson (6th), Marc Jarvis (9th), Adam Smith (11th), Anthony Bosher (12th), Jonny Halliday (39th) and Kev Purves (66th) were 3rd highest with 146 outcomes.
  • The highest weekly score of the season was 21 points by Paul Maxwell on week 7. This was 3 points higher than last seasons top score. Graeme Golledge scored 18 points on week 28, while Barry Beck scored 17 points on the final week. Maxwell’s tally of 21 points was enough to see him go 2nd on the all-time top scores list.
  • Out of the 38 weeks, 48 people managed to end a week as top scorer, but only 7 of you experienced a weekly top spot finish on more than one occasion. Ben Burnip, Glenn Baker, Craig Rowell, Bert Chilvers, Kev Booth, Phil Ellis and Amanda Adams were all top scorers on 2 separate weeks.
  • An average weekly score of 6.5 (247pts) was enough to qualify into next seasons Bezza Europe, the lowest since 2021. The tally of 260 points to make the top 10 was also down on previous seasons, 10 seasons in fact, and was the 3rd lowest tally for a 10th place finish in Bezza League history.
  • It looks like the winners curse was at it again this season. Last seasons champion Harris Khan could only manage a 69th place finish, his lowest since joining the Bezza League in 2013 and only the second time he is outside the top 32. Could Aitchison break this trend next season.
  • 5 of our top 10 make it into the top 10 for the first time. Ian Holley (8th) makes it in at the first time of asking. Kev Booth (2nd) and Tim Simpson (6th) both make it in at the second attempt. Marc Jarvis (9th) and Colin Timney (10th) also make the top 10 for the first time.
  • Only 2 of our 20 newcomers this season made it into the top 32. Ian Holley (8th) and David Holley (13th) both qualify for Bezza Europe next year.
  • Here is a look at how well our other former champions have fared this season…Rachel Baird (68th), Adam Cairns (46th), Paul Simpson (87th), Paul Ryder (90th), Rob Bosher Jnr (22nd), Simon Bowden (43rd), Tom Beck (37th), Kev Morrison (4th), Dan Stewart (5th), Chris Wood (30th) and Harris Khan (69th).

Rearranged Fixture…

Well this rearranged fixture for Wednesday night has caught me out…my apologies!

We have a match that has been brought forward from the middle of March to this week. Wolves v Arsenal from Week 31 is now on Wednesday night with kick off @ 8pm.

Back to week 27 on Saturday 21st Feb, with predictions due for 3pm

Weeks 28, 29 and 30 are now also open!

Player Of The Month – August

Not surprising that Ian Gibson takes player of the month with the most points due to him being top after the opening 3 weeks.
Ian also scored the most amount of correct scores (5) for August, along with Rachel Hay and Darren Laidler. Nathan Smillie and Sarah Ellis both predicted the most amount of correct outcomes with 17.

Bezza League 24-25 Review

Firstly, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for taking part again this season. Obviously it wouldn’t exist without all of you making it what it is. Hopefully you have enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing you take part again next season. We hope to make some more improvements and adjustments for the new season after another successful campaign in the bag. The addition of the Eliminator this season seemed to be a positive so will look to run more of those again.

Its 2 weeks now since Harris Khan won his first title in the Bezza League, some may say it was about time. Khan has come so close on many occasions over the years but finally made it over the line this season. In the end he won it by 13 points, which is the 3rd biggest winning margin. Khan now has the highest points per week (PPW) average in Bezza League history with 7.45ppw, just ahead of former champion Tom Beck (7.33ppw) and Alex Hamilton (7.31ppw). Khan spent 9 weeks at the top of the table this season, with 8 of the those at the end of the season.

A massive congratulations to our cup competition winners as well this season…Craig Robinson (Cup), Steve Chilton (Europe), Kev Purves (Shield) and David Purves (Knockout). Well done to the 4 winners of our new Eliminator comps…Harris Khan, Philip Gray, Stevie Fairless and Greg Pullinger.

Here are a few more stats and bits of info that may interest you from the season just gone…

  • The most amount of correct scores were predicted by our league champion Harris Khan with 49. Mick Wilson who finished in 5th was 2nd on that list with 48, Craig Robinson (6th) predicted 47 correct scores.
  • Phillip Clayton finished 68th in the league but still managed to come out on top with the most amount of correct outcomes predicting 172. Mark Johnson, who was 20th, was 2nd with 170 correct outcomes. Jamie Liddell was the 3rd highest with 169 outcomes, despite finishing in 89th position.
  • As shown above, Harris Khan spent 9 weeks at the top of the table during the season which was the most anyone spent at the summit this campaign. Craig Robinson, only in his second season, spent 7 weeks at the top. While Ken Nicholson and Andrew Davison both topped the table for 5 weeks. Kev Purves (4 weeks), Adam Brown (4 weeks), Greg Pullinger (2 weeks), Chris Hodgson (2 weeks) and Craig Allan (1 week) all experienced some time at the top.
  • The highest weekly score of the season was 18 points, 1 point better than the highest last season. Craig Robinson opened up on week 1 with 18 points, with Ian Rogerson and Adam Goode scoring 18 points on week 31. Not enough to get on the board for the top 3 scores of all time.
  • Out of the 38 weeks, 8 people experienced a weekly top spot finish on more than one occasion. Craig Robinson, Rory Kirk, Stevie Fairless, Alex McIsaac, Aaron Carr, Ian Rogerson, Rachel Baird and Adam Smith were all top scorers on 2 separate weeks.
  • An average weekly score of 6.7 was enough to qualify into next seasons Bezza Europe, the lowest since 2021. The tally of 268 points to make the top 10 was also down on previous seasons and was the 4th lowest tally for a 10th place finish in Bezza League history.
  • Harris Khan has now finished in the top 32 in 11 of his 12 seasons in the Bezza and out of those 11 seasons he has been in the top 10 on 9 occasions. Kev Purves, who was 2nd in the league this season makes the top 10 for only the second time, the first time back in 2013 he was runner up on that occasion as well. Carl Collier was 3rd this season, finishes in the top 10 for the first time.
  • Last seasons champion Chris Wood found it particularly hard this season, finishing down in 85th. The winners curse strikes again! We still await someone to retain or regain a Bezza League title. Could it be Khan next season?
  • Here is a look at how well our other former champions have fared this season…Rachel Baird (45th), Adam Cairns (94th), Paul Simpson (15th), Paul Ryder (47th), Rob Bosher Jnr (23rd), Simon Bowden (39th), Tom Beck (37th), Kev Morrison (44th) and Dan Stewart (8th).
  • 2 out of our 12 newcomers this season made it into the top 32. Rory Kirk (21st) and Graeme Golledge (28th) both qualify for Bezza Europe next year.
